My sincerest condolences to the Layne family. SGM Layne was one of the most intelligent, intellectual, caring, straightforward individuals that I have ever met in my civilian career with DoD. J.B. was a Mentor to me while I was assigned to DPTMS at Ft. Lewis.
His wisdom and military bearing were always exemplary. His historical knowldge of Ft. Lewis and Reserve component operations has helped thousands of Guard and Reserve Soldiers succesfull acomplish their training requirements. J B and I met years ago, talking about the military and young adults. He retired CSM from the Army and I retired SEA from the Air Force, he was on the Clover Park School Board and I was on the Steilacoom School Board. I knew J.B. from three perspectives--as soldier, Lakewood supporter and friend. He served his country honorably and well for over 50 years. That's Hoo Ah! J.B. was very active in the incorporation effort with advice and shoe leather. Once Cityhood was achieved he became the conscience of the Council--attending almost every Council meeting and never hesitating to offer his opinion!! Even when he disagreed with the Council no one ever doubted his sincere love of Lakewood. And finally, once my wife became ill, I never saw J.B. anywhere that he did not inquire about Jo's condition. And he ALWAYS departed asking to "be remembered to Mrs. Harrison." This aspect of J.B.--ever the gentleman, was very much appreciated. May he rest in peace. I remember JB when he served on the Clover Park School District"s Board of Directors at the monthly meetings. JB was a lone ranger on the school board , but he always got his questions answered. He was very persistent and honest. The battle was bigger than you JB , but I thank you for your effort. You gave it your best shot and I thank you for that.
I met up with JB again about two and a half years ago at a local tire shop. We chatted for quite a while...he even remembered my name and what I used to do for the school district...over nine years later.
I remember JB as being an honest man who always had time to talk with "the little guy". That was one of many character traits that I admired the most about him.
God bless you JB....thank you for the memories..I will never forget them...or you!!
