James Orval Hanson's Obituary
The cloudless, sunny skies opened heavenly vistas of NW summits for the homecoming of James O. Hanson, January 13, 2008. He peacefully passed surrounded by the loving hands of his family. He was born July 23, 1936, in Watertown, SD. The Midwest's legacy of love for outdoor activities and grounded family values enhanced his personal integrity, loyalty and generosity. He will be dearly remembered for his amazing smile, joy in life, consistent achievement and stalwart character. Jim lettered in three sports at the University of South Dakota, graduating with a Marketing degree in 1958. He played professional football for the Montreal Alloetes until Uncle Sam called him for a 6 month National Guard commitment. Returning to Watertown, he began an exceptional career in the life insurance industry. He was a member of the Million-Dollar Round Table his first year and then chose to become a district mgr. in Grand Forks, ND, where he married his wife of 47 years. Uncle Sam again called him as a National Guard filler to the 32nd Division at Ft. Lewis, WA during the '61 Berlin Crisis where he trained for 9 months. Settling in Lakewood, Jim became an independent Regional Director for Midland National Life and a long-term member of the Tacoma Association of Life Underwriters. A natural leader, Jim consistently led and encouraged 100's of NW achievers. Propelling his region to annual awards year after year, Jim received a special award for Exceptional Achievement and Excellence commemorating his 46 years in the industry. A member of Christ Lutheran Church in Lakewood for 37 years, Jim joined Key Peninsula Lutheran Church after moving to Lakebay, WA 9 years ago. He was a supporter of Lakewood Jaycees, Elks Club, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital, Greater Lakes Mental Health, Tacoma Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army. His generosity enveloped all in need. A 'man's man' with a heart for God, he unflinchingly shared his talents and blessings with those around him. Young Life, Youth for Christ, Boys and Girls Club and Evergreen Freedom Foundation were his priorities. The outdoors magnetized Jim with a pronounced passion for hunting and fishing. When told he was obsessed, Jim said he was committed! Athletics remained a great interest throughout life and was evident in his passionate coaching of little league baseball and football; and excelling at the Lakewood Racquet Club as a competitive team player. He enjoyed worldwide travel, good music, good food and cooking and serving others with ardent joy. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Myrtle Hanson and daughter Christine. He is survived by loving sons Terry and Elaine Hanson of Albuquerque and Diana and Nicole; Steve Hanson of Boise and Daniel and James, devoted wife Aileen, brothers Maurie and Judy Hanson, Terry and Barbara, and sister Carole and Darrold Bogenreif as well as numerous nieces and nephews. We celebrate Jim's life of gifted spirit and humbling demeanor in all his endeavors. Services and a reception will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, January 19th, at 1pm in the Celebration of Life Center, 253-584-0252. In lieu of flowers, send gifts to Gig Harbor Young Life. 253-851-8813
