James "Jim" Ellwein's Obituary
James “Jim” Ellwein, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington. Born in Tacoma on June 11, 1946, Jim was the oldest of two boys to Erhart “Bill” and Opal Ellwein.
A proud graduate of Mt. Tahoma High School, Class of 1964, Jim went on to build a remarkable 30-year career with Pierce Transit. Starting as a driver, his dedication and hard work carried him all the way to Assistant Manager of Specialized Transportation before retiring. Jim had a natural knack for anything mechanical—cars, motorcycles, you name it—and loved spending time tinkering and fixing things.
When the computer age first arrived at Pierce Transit, Jim embraced the challenge. He loved working with computers and spent many long nights—sometimes all night—getting systems up and running.
In 1975, Jim married the love of his life, Christine, and together they built a beautiful life. He embraced Christine’s son, Bryan, as his own and later welcomed their son, Daniel, completing the family. Many of their happiest memories were made camping and riding trails together, often as part of the Tacoma Trail Cruisers Club. Jim was a hands-on dad, a devoted husband, and a man who truly put family first.
A lifelong sports fan, Jim cheered passionately for Seattle’s teams, especially the Mariners. He even spent years coaching in the Tacoma Women’s League, proudly leading his team, “El Hutchos,” to a first-place tournament finish.
His wife, Tina, shared these heartfelt words:
“Fifty years ago Jim took my hand and gave me his name. He then served me the world on a silver platter. I will forever be thankful for his enduring love.”
Jim is survived by his wife, Christine; sons Bryan Albright and Daniel (Melissa) Ellwein; grandchildren Andrea and Cameron, and Joseph; nephew and niece Rick and Denise Rutz; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Opal Ellwein, and his brother, Ron Ellwein.
Jim’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and loyalty—a life well-lived and deeply cherished.
