Moving to Wenatchee from San Diego gave me the opportunity to visit Uncle Howard and Aunt Dikka on the “other side of the mountains.” I remember our first visit; when we pulled up, I could smell the wonderful aroma of his North Carolina Barbecue, a special treat for any North Carolinian.
Uncle Howard love talking sports and politics but I most fondly remember the hours he spent swapping military stories with my husband Skip USN (Ret). The military has always played an important part in our family. My husband and I belong to the American Legion Post 10 in Wenatchee. As a fundraiser, bricks were laid at the Post to honor family members’ current and past military service. Just last week we saw the engraved brick we ordered honoring Uncle Howard’s service. I took a photo and was looking forward to sharing it with him. We had mentioned this project to him on an earlier visit and he knew a brick was being placed in his honor.
During my visits Uncle Howard would often call me into the room to point out the deer eating apples in his back yard. He got such pleasure seeing my excitement as I watched those beautiful creatures. Gardening brought him such pleasure and he
always enjoyed showing me around his beautifully planted yard.
I will forever treasure our visits

Dear Aunt Dikka & family, may the love of family and friends comfort you during these difficult days. Fond memories are a blessing and I’m so grateful for the visits with you and Uncle Howard that my sisters, brother, and I have been able to make in recent years. We enjoyed Uncle Howard reminiscing about growing up on the tobacco farm in North Carolina and stories of his Air Force career. The stories he related gave us additional insight into family history. Though separated by miles, he was so dedicated to keeping in touch with both his NC family and with my dad, his brother, in San Diego. We know Uncle Howard truly loved his country and enjoyed serving it for 30 years. He built such a beautiful home for the family he loved and shared with you, his lifelong love, to his very last days. He was so blessed to have such a long and fulfilling life and he will be greatly missed. With my love, Barbara Nell (Britt) Campbell
