Hilda O. Markert's Obituary
Hilda Olive Markert Hilda Olive Markert, age 94, passed away February 17, 2009, in Tacoma. She was born December 2, 1914 in Sollid, Montana on a homestead farm to Julie and Gilbert Floberg and was the eldest of eight children. She was baptized at the age of 8 days. In 1922, when Hilda was 8-years old her family crossed the Rocky Mountains in a covered wagon and a Model-T Ford on their way to Longbranch, Washington. After graduation from Vaughn High School in 1934, she married John Markert in 1935 and moved soon thereafter to Tacoma, where they had three daughters. The family moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon for five years, where she became a Camp Fire Girls leader and took several extension classes before returning to Tacoma in 1951. She was a devoted member of Bethlehem Church in Tacoma, which was the center of her life for many years. She taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and held offices in both the local and district Lutheran Church Women's organizations. In addition to her involvement in her church, she was an avid gardener and enjoyed painting, crafts, cooking and sewing. She worked for many years as a nurse's aide and ward clerk at The Doctor's Hospital. In recent years she had been a resident of the Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband John, infant daughter Joan Marie, her parents, a sister Irene, who died in childhood, brothers George, Richard, and Ray Floberg, and a second sister Irene. She is survived by her daughters Joyce (Roger) Olson and Marilyn Strand, grandsons Leonard and Brent (Lori) Olson and Kevin and Andrew (Renee) Strand, great grandsons Nicholas Strand and Danny Olson, and brothers Elvin and Jay Floberg. Viewing at Mountain View Funeral Home Thursday, Feb. 26, from 2:00 PM - 9:00 PM and Friday, Feb. 27, from 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM, followed by the committal service Friday at 3:30 PM. Her memorial service will be at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 101 East 38th on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at 11:00 AM. Memorial gifts may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in lieu of flowers.
