Herta Elwena Bullock's Obituary
Herta E. Bullock went to be with the Lord on March 6, 2019.
Herta was born in Blackfoot, Idaho on January 30, 1923. Her parents, Alfred and Clara Lange, emigrated from Poland in the early 1900's and moved to a farm in Idaho. When the family farmhouse caught fire, Herta's sister Norma is credited with heroically saving her baby sister Herta's life. After the fire, the Lange family (Alfred, Clara, Helen, Norma, Herta and Elvera) moved to Tacoma. Herta's parents joined the First German Baptist Church, which was later renamed Calvary Baptist church during World War II. She was married to DeForest Bullock in 1942 around Valentine's Day at Calvary Baptist Church, and they were married for 68 years. Herta found great joy in her fellowship and service with her church. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for over 30 years, worked in the church kitchen, was active in Women's missionary Society for over 60 years, was on the prayer team and attended many Bible studies. She worked for years beside her husband DeForest with many of the church's operations - even the church bus was kept at their home. She expressed that her family and church were the best things she did.
Herta was a master gardener. Her expertly canned peaches melted in your mouth, and her green beans were so tasty. Her pies even won awards at the Puyallup Fair. She was skilled with the sewing machine, eager to extend the life of a garment that was well loved. Her hems were perfectly level. She could exquisitely create almost anything out of fabric. She loved to share her talents to help others. She smiled often and always had a gentle sense of humor. One of her greatest pleasures in life was listening to her children sing or play music. Her home was filled with budding musicians. She was a teacher in many ways, an amazing speller, editor and reader, which helped her children and husband to excellence. She loved family; many reunions were held in her home. The bench swing in the backyard was always ready for all to have popsicles. Often, she would be on the back swing with one of her sisters. She was "Grandma Honey" as her Grandson Eric liked to call her.
Herta is survived by her sister Elvera, her daughter Bonnie (and her children Louis, Renee and Nicole), her son David (and his wife Hope, and their children Joy and Esther), preceded in death by her daughter Barbara (survived by her husband Doug and son Eric). She is also remembered by her many nephews and nieces. Her greatest pleasure and happiness was raising her family.
A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Tacoma at 3:30 PM on Saturday May 4, 2019. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to her memorial at Calvary Baptist Church.
