Helen Walike Young's Obituary
Helen Annie Walike Young, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on February 18th, 2016. She was born in Bath, New York on September 21, 1921. She was the eldest of seven children born to Anthony and Mamie Walike. After high school, she attended University of Rochester School of Nursing, ultimately serving as an RN in teh US Army Nurse Corps at Madigan Hospital. While service, she met and married her husband of 66 years, Hal Young. During his career, they lived in Switzerland, Italy, Greece, and England. While in Geneva, Mom founded and worked with a group of volunteer nurses who worked with sick and injured children brought from all over the world for medical treatment. She also volunteered at the hospital in Geneva when ever her OR skills were needed. A highlight of her many travels was a photo safari to the Etosha National Park in Namibia.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband, and two brother, Henry and Bruce. She is survived by her two children, daughter Rondi Johnson (Lowell) of Lakewood, and son Steve Young (Annica) Malmo, Sweden, five grandchildren, Rick, Brandon, Meghan, Susannah, and Daniel, and three great-grandchildren, Daisy, Mac and Hugo. She is also survived by three brother, Edward, George, and Joseph, and a sister, Caroline.
Mom was a caring, loving mother and friend. She was a wonderful storyteller and writer. When the family gathered, listening to tales of her many experiences was always a highlight.
She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by all her family and friends.
