Hazel Hanel's Obituary
In Memory of Hazel Hanel Hazel Hanel was born in Butte, Montana on August 1, 1927. Her parents Philip Mischkot and Annie Osterman emigrated to Butte from Austria and Germany, where they met and later married. Hazel was the fourth of seven children. Her brother and sisters, Philip, Roseanne and Wilma were born in Tacoma, Washington before their father returned to Butte to work the copper mines. Following Hazel's birth, Frank, Pauline and James were born. Immediately after graduating from Butte High School in June 1945, Hazel moved to Great Falls, Montana to work for the US Army, repatriating service men and women returning from WWII. She met Edward Hanel in July 1946, fell in love and was married September 16, 1946 in St. Anne's Cathedral. Her two sons Edward and Doug were born in Great Falls and the family was transferred to Edmonton Alberta, Canada in support of Joint Air Force Operations where their daughter Jean was born. In 1954, Ed and Hazel were transferred to McChord Air Force Base, Lakewood, Washington. Her children, Betty, Philip and Lauren were born in Lakewood which became the family's permanent residence. All six children graduated from St. Frances Cabrini School. Hazel devoted her life to supporting the Parish and School. From the time her oldest son entered First Grade in 1954 until Hazel's retirement as the Reading Resource Center Teacher in 2003 at the age of 75, Hazel worked tirelessly raising her children and influencing many others as she helped them find their true potential. In 1991, she was recognized by Sam's Club as Teacher of the Year. In 2000, the Seattle Archdiocese commemorated her 20 years of Teaching Service Hazel will be remembered as a purposeful dreamer, devoted wife, caring mother, inspiring teacher and fun loving grandmother. Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband Edward in 1996 and is survived by her brothers Frank and Jim, her six children and their spouses as well as eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to St. Frances Cabrini's 21st Century Endowment Fund in memory of Hazel Hanel. She devoted her life to child education and is leaving a legacy to make sure children can obtain a Catholic Education. Vigil Service and Rosary will be at Mountain View Funeral Home, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood, WA 98456 on September 20, 2017 at 6:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be at St. Frances Cabrini Church, 5715 108th St SW, Lakewood, WA 98499 on September 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Hazel will be laid to rest at Mountview Memorial Park with her husband Ed.
