Hattie D. Murphy's Obituary
In the presence of her family at home, Hattie passed over quietly on October 1, 2003 at the age of 79.Born Hattie Mattheis in Beulah, North Dakota, she moved to Olympia, Washington with her family. There she met her husband Reginald Murphy, a Fort Lewis soldier, while she was employed as one of the thousands of women during World War II who answered the call to serve in the role of Â"Rosie the Riveter,Â" working in traditional male occupations so that men were free to serve in uniform. After moving to Lakewood in 1950, she operated the Snack Bar at the former Lakewood Ice Arena.Throughout the years, Hattie maintained her love of gardening. She treasured her hours spent tending the soil and her flowers. Her wish to enjoy one last summer in her garden was fulfilled.She was preceded in death by her loving husband Reg and is survived by her son, Terrence Murphy and daughter-in-law, Joan Murphy; sister, Ruth Krause of Yakima, Washington; granddaughter, Kristen Cranmer and her husband, Ron; and great-grandchildren, Riley and Dustin.At HattieÂ's request, a private, family graveside service will be held.
