I'm shocked I just today learned of Harriet's death. I am so sad and my heart is grieving with her family and all her many, many friends. Harriet andI go back to my days at the Tacoma Urban League in the late 80s through the late 90s. In those days, Harriet was building the national parent training model called PET - Parent Education and Training. During those years she was also a Family Involvement staff person with TPS. We used to cut up all the time just to blow off steam, lol. We both worked with youth and I always respected and admired Harriet. She was fierce and tireless. She will be so missed and I'm so sad I didn't know she passed. I didn't even know she was ill, bless her heart. I hope she s=didn't suffer and I know she is resting. Miss Harriet was a true champion of faith and families. Her passion for opening doors, developing tools for others to use and for advocating selflessly brought success to so many in all areas of their lives. She was inspiring and courageous. She treated everyone with dignity and kindness, working to build bridges to a bright future for all.
Her love for her family was obvious to everyone. She spoke of each one with such tenderness and was so proud of the men and women they had become. The stories she shared about Nelson and his courting of her were heartwarming and filled with humor. They were an amazing couple.
Her laughter could bring a smile to anyone’s face and her passion inspired us all. As she and I worked together on education and equity issues, we often upset the apple cart. I found it delightful to go into a meeting with everyone from the US Secretary of Education to the Washington Alliance of Black School Educators and watch the surprise on their faces to see us as a united front addressing issues and standing against the statis quo. I will never forget the day I introduced her to the Deputy Secretary to the US Secretary of ED and how she took him to the woodshed on the lack of support for families in the educational system and the importance of partnering together for all students to succeed. The look on his face was priceless. She also served to influence First Lady Laura Bush on the importance of understanding and empowering families on behalf of their children. Where ever she went she made an impact all while letting her deep and abiding faith shine through.
Her walk of faith and service was remarkable. She never needed to try to bring attention to herself. The Lord lifted her up and brought her to the forefront and she always gave Him the Glory!
There is not a day that I don’t miss the friendship, wisdom and companionship we shared. She was a bright light and she has changed my life for the better by calling me friend. I miss her dearly and look forward to the day we stand before our Lord in Heaven holding hands and celebrating eternity together.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful woman with us all!

Harriett was a great warrior for the cause of her people! She was well respected and loved by all who knew her. I shall always cherish her kindness and love shown to me and my family, in fact she was like a mother to me at a time in my life. My prayers go out to the family and friends for comfort and peace. I remember taking this beautiful portrait of her when she ran for city council position in Tacoma. Rest in Heaven Mother Harriett! Always love you!
