Harold Thompson's Obituary
Harold Thompson was born October 14, 1927 in Tacoma, to Peder [Peter] Theodor and Elen Sofie [Nilsen] Thomassen [Thompson] and died October 17, 2013 in Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Ingwald Thompson & twin brother Harry Thompson, sister, Louise Miller, daughter, Linda Gene Thompson, and step-son, Joe Daniel Wells.
Harold's family came from Norway by 1925 and he was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. Harold was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church. He attended Horace Mann grade School, Stewart Jr. High, and Lincoln H.S. During World War II, he and his twin brother, Harry, joined the Navy in October just before their 17th birthday and served from 1944 - 1948. Harold served on Johnston Island in the Pacific and in Hawaii. He was a member of the Teamsters Local #313 and worked for Gilbo Moving & storage for 32-1/2 years, retiring in 1990. Harold enjoyed his retirement working at home and traveling, and for several years being at Jake's Roofing with his brother, Harry. Harold painted cars and trucks, and worked on antique cars and Harry had a welding shop. The two of them enjoyed good times together and with family and friends at this place they called the "Hood". He was a past member of the Tacoma Elks and South End Lion's Club.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Thora [Barrett], two sons, Cary Thompson of Tacoma, Lonnie Thompson [Treva] of Tenino, eight grandchildren: John Murphy of Tacoma, Tiffani Thompson of Centralia, Jesse Thompson of Yelm, Amber Mayerl [Jon] from Yelm, Loni Lynn Thompson of New York, Kimberly Kennedy [Jason] of New York, Kelly Tuson of Gig Harbor, and Chad Graven of Portland; and three great grandchildren, Jordan Murphy of Tacoma, Kiersten Thompson of Yelm, and Jacob Osborn of Gig Harbor.
He is also survived by nephews, nieces, cousins and many other family members in the United States, Norway and Iceland. Harold was a gentle and kind man who loved his family. He was always full of life. He was a wonderful and loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to many. We know he is with his family who preceded him in death now and at peace. He will be greatly missed by all!
Funeral services will be held at the Mountain View Funeral Home, Garden Chapel, Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 3:00pm.
