Hannelore Ida Gesina Hogan's Obituary
Hannelore Ida Gesina Hogan, known as “Hanni” to family and “Lori” to friends, aged 90, peacefully passed away, Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at Madigan Army Medical Center in Lakewood, Washington. Her husband Wayne, her five children, and extended family members were with her. Hannelore was born in Fulda, Germany on January 28, 1932 to Gustav and Maria Franke. Hannelore was the youngest of three daughters and was raised with her sisters Ruth and Inge in Glucksburg Germany. Hannelore had a difficult and challenging childhood as she survived World War II while living in Germany. She lost both her parents at a very young age. She was only 10 years old when she lost her mother to breast cancer. At the age of 11, her father was arrested by the Gestapo and executed. Hannelore and her sisters were then raised by her father’s sister and struggled to survive for the duration of the war.
As a young adult, Hannelore went to England looking for a better future and worked as a nurse in a tuberculosis hospital. After a couple of years, she returned and reunited with her sisters in Munich, Germany in 1955. Hannelore met the love of her life, 2Lt Wayne Hogan, that same year and her life was never the same again. Wayne was shown a picture of Hannelore by her sister Inge, resulting in a first date. They fell in love quickly and were soon engaged and married the following year on March 4, 1956. Hannelore and Wayne have celebrated 66 loving years of marriage together and have 5 children, 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. One of their greatest joys is gathering the entire family of over 25 members to celebrate their annual wedding anniversary together.
Hannelore lived a life of service. She supported her husband's military career with grace and pride and was the epitome of an officer's wife. While raising five children, she endured two tours while her husband fought in Vietnam, several TDY’s and field excursions. She was the rock and stay that moved her family of seven throughout the United States and Europe over 33 years of military life. Her endless strength and resolve to support her family was extensive. In her later years, she supported her husband on numerous volunteer positions with the Knights of Columbus. Hannelore always put the spotlight on her family and she was the pillar on which they all leaned.
Hannelore was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She felt blessed to have all her children and most of her grandchildren live close by. Family was everything to her and her greatest joy was witnessing the milestones and triumphs throughout their lives. She was the kindest and gentlest of souls and her strength was unmatched as she shepherded and guided her family through life.
Hannelore is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Wayne; her five children, Gesina (Doug) Silva, Pat (Sandy), Kathy (Mark) Collins, Theresa (Donald) Brown and Michael. Grandchildren Joshua, Heather (Sean), Sean (Emily), Matthew, Marcus (Stephanie), Hannelore, Brendan, Shane and Maggie. Great grandchildren Rose, Grace, Scarlett, Teddy and Harry.
Hannelore is preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Maria Franke and her two sisters Ruth and Inge.
