Grace Elaine Forch's Obituary
Grace Elaine Forch, 81, of Longbranch, Washington, passed away on September 28, 2025, Elaine was born on May 21, 1944, in Prineville, Oregon to Henrietta Hale and Charles Peyton. The eldest of three children, she grew up in Tacoma, Washington alongside her sister, Patricia Williams and her brother, Michael Peyton, who preceded her in death.
Elaine attended Lincoln High School before transferring to Mount Tahoma High School where she graduated. In 1962, she married Gary Gjerstad, and they had three children; Kristin, Kevin, and Kurtis.
Elaine was a devoted mother who worked hard to provide for her family and find the bright side of every situation. Countless adventures and holiday events were organized for family and friends, often in partnership with her beloved sister and lifelong friend, Pattie. As a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church, Elaine served in many roles. She, along with sister Pattie, led a thriving AWANA children’s program together, and Elaine loved singing in the choir and performing in cantatas. She also taught Sunday school and was well known for the stories she told in her classes.
In 1973, Elaine began working at Tacoma Baptist School, where her children, nieces and nephews also attended. Over the years, she wore many hats; managing the Student Center, substitute teaching, and coaching volleyball. During that time, she also continued her education at Washington Baptist Teacher’s College.
Following the close of her first marriage, Elaine began a new chapter with the City of Tacoma, where she rose to serve as Administrative Manager for the Streets and Grounds Division. She took great pride in her work, particularly her contributions to the Community Schools Program and Employee Development initiative.
In 1977, Elaine married Harrold Forch, and in 1983 they moved to their home in Longbranch, where they were active members of Lakebay Community Church for more than 40 years.
Elaine is survived by her sister, Pattie Williams; daughter, Kristin Miller (Dean); son, Kevin Gjerstad (Kathrine); stepson, Hal Forch (Donna); stepdaughter, Susannah Rosener, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harrold Forch, in 2024, and her son, Kurt Gjerstad in 1983.
Guided by her faith and love for others, Elaine devoted her life to her family, her church, and her community. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and grace. Elaine will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
A combined Celebration of Life for Elaine and Harrold will be held on Saturday, December 6, at 10:00 a.m. at Lakebay Community Church.
