Gloria Anita Powell's Obituary
Gloria Anita Powell was born on November 21, 1939, in Port of Spain, Trinidad, to the late Cecil and Mildred Steward Dannett. She was the third of five children. Her beloved sisters, Yvone and Joyce, preceded her in death.
At the age of eight, Gloria’s family moved to Georgetown Guyana. After completing high school, she pursued her passion for caring for others and attended a four-year nursing program in London, England. She graduated from her nursing degree and earned the distinguished title of Registered Nurse of England and Wales.
On December 24, 1961, Gloria met the love of her life, Walter, while on her way to Christmas Mass with a friend. Their connection was instant and enduring. After a year of courtship, Walter received military orders and was stationed in France, but their love never wavered. He frequently flew with the Canadian Air Force from France to London to see her. Upon Gloria’s graduation from nursing school, Walter proposed. They were married January 17,1964, in London, England and honeymooned in Wales before moving to the United States to begin their life together.
Gloria devoted her life to nursing, working in various hospitals across the United States. One memorable experience was at Apple Valley Hospital in California, where she had the honor of administering vaccines to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Later, while working in the emergency room at University Hospital in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, she assisted in treating the actor Tab Hunter.
She continued her career in service to others at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington, where she spent 23 years in the OB/GYN department. Gloria deeply loved caring for mothers and their babies. She also received a Certificate of Appreciation from Madigan for her contributions during Operation Desert Storm. Her dedication to service extended beyond her profession, as she was also a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
After eight years of marriage, Gloria and Walter were blessed with a daughter, Andrea. Andrea became the joy of their lives and a source of immense pride. She is a proud graduate of the University of Washington in Seattle.
Gloria and Walter shared 65 beautiful years of love and friendship, including 62 years of marriage. Gloria was known for her warm spirit, love of sewing, gardening-especially her roses-cooking, and baking. She will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and deep love for her family.
She is survived by her devoted husband Walter; cherished daughter, Andrea; loving sister, Vicky; brothers Cecil and Charles; nieces Beverly and Annie; nephews Steve and Michael; cousin Rose; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
Gloria’s life was one of service, love, and quiet strength. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched.
