It was my misfortune not to have had Gerald find my doorstep earlier than he did. I could tell instantly that Mr. Dennis was cut from the same cloth as my own parents; friendly, courteous, and holding to a code of ethics and character that seems to be quickly vanishing from today's society.
Toward the end of his life, I was his "watch guy". He would keep me company after I had done whatever minor repair was necessary on his watch, due to the fact that his shuttles policy of "drop you off and get you later". He was always cheery and a great pleasure to have in my shop, although I must admit, the man had an ornery streak. On what I now know would be his last visit to my shop, I would not take his money for what I recall was a trivial amount. I told him that I didn't think it fair that he should have to wait around all that time and I couldn't possibly charge him. Well, he showed me who would have the last word on that score, because when he got home, he wrote a note and enclosed some cash and put it in the mail. He wrote:
"Greetings Ward,
Thanks for all consideration and your generosity and I do
appreciate your friendship. As my handicapped daughter
would say: "Have a day!"
Gerald
P.S. I know what my bill is. Balance your books. I have mine."
I still have the note, even though I never saw Gerald since he sent it more than 5 years ago. I only learned of his passing today, when I Googled his name because I was curious about why he had not visited in a while. Now I know; rest in peace, Gerald...
Sincerely,
Ward C. Tingley
