George Wright
On Thursday, May 10, 2012, God called home one of his angels, George Wright. George was born on April 17, 1936 in Savannah, Georgia, the oldest of two children born to the late George Wright and Aldonia Duncan. He graduated from Jr. High School 139 and Benjamin Franklin High School, New York, NY; he began boxing there as a youngster. George met Norma Jean Bennett in 1950 in Harlem, New York while they were in middle school. The lovers married in September 1957; two children, Yvette and Brian, came from this union. George began service with the United States Armed Forces in 1956; he was stationed at Fort Lewis Army base in Tacoma, Washington. He worked at Nalley Fine Foods from 1960 to 1997. Hailed as one of the best middleweights to come out of the Northwest Golden Gloves boxing competition, George fought professionally from 1961 to 1967, gaining the titles of USA Washington State and Pacific Northwest Middleweight Champion. He later became a trainer at the Boys Club of Tacoma where he trained many prominent boxers, traveling the globe for bouts. George was inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. Affable and well-loved by many, George is survived by his loving and faithful wife Norma, his two children, Yvette Gauff of Sacramento, CA and Brian Wright and daughter-in-law Brandi, one brother, Thomas 'Buster' Brown of Augusta, GA, sister and brother-in-law James and Frieda Mack of New York, NY; six grandchildren, Anthony, Brianna, Bryson, Caleb, Jayda and Aaliyah, two great-grandchildren, Ja'Mirra and Jaz'Murray, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Viewing Friday, May 18, 2012 at Mountain View Funeral Home, 4100 Steilacoom Boulevard SW, Lakewood from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at SureHouse Open Bible Church, 901 South 10th Street, Tacoma, WA.
