George Anthony Pender Sr's Obituary
George Anthony Pender Sr. “Tony,” was born on February 15, 1958 in Tacoma, WA to his late parents George Pender and Clara VanDorn.
Tony grew up in Salishan in Tacoma, resided on 34th and Portland Avenue for some time, and later returned to reside in Tacoma’s Eastside in the Salishan neighborhood. Tony was a graduate of Lincoln High School’s class of 1976, where he played varsity football for 3 years. Following high school, Tony attended Tacoma Community College and Pacific Lutheran University. He earned his Bachelors degree in religious studies as well as social work. Tony had a long career working for Northwest Door in their warehouse as a laborer and machine operator for many years. He also ran a Christmas tree stand on 40th and Portland Avenue for a few years.
A devoted Christian, Tony was most proud of the birth of his two beautiful children; his daughter Deirdre and son George Pender Jr. He was also proud of his baptism. Tony belonged to the Miracle Group on 56th and South Tacoma Way for over 20 years.
A lover of nature, Tony often enjoyed fishing and crabbing. In addition to these, he loved to shoot pool. Funky Good Time and Hot Pants by James Brown were a few of his favorite tunes to listen to.
Tony is preceded in death by his parents George Pender and Clara VanDorn . He is survived by his daughter Deirdre Griggs, sons George Anthony Pender Jr., and Dimitri, his brother David Pender Sr., grandson Rayland Jensen Jr., a host of family members to include David Jr., Dameika, Davida, Kendy, Branden, as well as many other family and friends.
The family would like to thank Reverend Banks of Eastside Baptist Church, the staff at Saint Joseph Medical Center, Mountain View Funeral Home and Memorial Park, and everyone that has sent flowers, cards, and words of encouragement during this time.
