George Sydney Jourdan Jr.'s Obituary
George Sydney Jourdan Jr. passed away at the age of 85 on October 18, 2022, after a short illness. George was born to George and Vera (Brown) Jourdan in New Orleans, Louisiana. George was the second oldest of five children and brother to his sisters, Dorothy, Sandra, Geraldine (Gerry), and Shirley.
After graduating from high school in 1955, George followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the military serving one tour in the Navy then transferring to the Air Force where he served as an aircraft mechanic, working on various aircraft including the F-101, the B-52, and the KC-135 tanker. He became a Master instructor and trained young Airmen in the aircraft maintenance career field. His military assignments took him to California, Massachusetts, Maine, Arkansas, and Texas; and overseas to Thailand, the Philippines, Guam, and Vietnam. During his assignment to Westover AFB in Massachusetts, he met his bride of 53 years, Eartha Lee Flimes. In 1969, the couple was blessed with their son Elliott.
George retired in the grade of Master Sergeant in 1976 after serving 21 years, 1 month and 2 days. After retirement, he, Eartha, and Elliott moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, where he worked for over 27 years at the Old Colony Paper Company. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling to visit his sisters, playing golf, and running the St John’s Congregational Church food pantry.
After the death of his wife in 2012, he joined his son Elliott and his family during their military assignments before settling in Dupont, Washington, in 2018.
A 2-time cancer survivor, George was happiest sunning, napping and reading his newspaper on the porch or the deck, attending his grandsons’ sporting events, bowling, golfing, and rooting for the New York Giants and Boston Red Sox. During the pandemic, George and his family started a weekly bible study, which he faithfully attended by way of Zoom, every Saturday morning.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eartha, his parents George and Vera, and his sisters, Dorothy Jourdan and Sandra Christopher. George is survived by his son, Elliott Jourdan, his daughter-in-law, Rose, his grandsons Elliott Jr. and Devin, and his sisters Geraldine Golden of New Orleans and Shirley Ross of Los Angeles, and many nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to the American Cancer Society.
