George Herbert Leppard's Obituary
George Herbert Leppard
April 10, 1920 ~ May 6, 2009
George, a longtime Tacoma resident, led a strong, healthy, loving, giving life, and died peacefully at the age of 89 years. George was raised during the Depression by his father, since his mother and siblings died when he was very young. He was a 1939 Stadium High School graduate. George served our country aboard the Navy Net Tender USSEButternut in WWII. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow veterans and attended annual reunions with his shipmates. One of his great joys was being sent by the V.F.W. to see the WWIIEMemorial in Washington D.C. He served as the Memorial Day flag raiser at Tahoma National Cemetery, where he will be buried with full military honors. George retired after 35 years from the U.S. Post Office. He was a people person who would strike up a conversation with anyone. He enjoyed working at the Puyallup Fair in the grandstand for over 30 years. A lifelong volunteer, he supported Boy Scouts of America, the V.F.W., the U.S. Postal Union, food banks, and was a blood donor. He and his wife were foster parents for 49 years. George loved camping, hiking, swimming, traveling, and watching his children play sports. He created some of his fondest memories traveling throughout the U.S.A. and the world with his wife by his side. George was most thankful for his wife Marjorie, whom he married in La Jolla, CA in 1945. Her love helped soften his rough edges from his harsh beginnings. After 63 years of marriage, even in sickness, George would still tell anyone who would listen how his wife was the greatest thing that ever happened to him. He was a faithful provider who cherished and loved his family. He is survived by his loving wife, his children Janice, Jerry, Robert, Mykael, Mary Anna, Roy, Ron, and grandchildren Marcus and Jemila. A memorial service/celebration of life will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church, 5634 S. Park Ave, Tacoma WA 98408, on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 1pm. Donations can be made to Franciscan Hospice House or Bethany United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
