Fred Ackers' Obituary
Lifelong Tacoma, Wash. resident, Frederick “Fred” H. Ackers, 89, passed away on December 17, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. Battling COPD and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Fred died as he lived: on his own terms.
Born August 27, 1929 to Mac and Helen Ackers, Fred graduated from Tacoma’s Lincoln High School in 1947. June 4, 1948, he married his lifelong love, Cherrie Hart.
After working for Pepsi Bottling Group for over 30 years, Fred retired in 1991.
Named the 2009 ECMO “Baby Blood” Donor of the Year, Fred made 190 donations, providing nearly 25 gallons of a rare type of newborn-safe blood. He was also a longtime supporter of veterans’ charities.
He is preceded in death by his wife, parents and son, Dennis Ackers. His survivors include his two daughters, Candy Yarbrough and Sandra Pfarr (Craig), seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at Fred’s favorite, The Cloverleaf in Tacoma, January 5, 2019 from 2:30-5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Cascade Regional Blood Services or your local blood bank. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Weatherly Inn.
