Floyd Andrew Crump's Obituary
As of March 6th, Heaven will hear a lot more laughter as Floyd “Andy” Andrew Crump joined
the angels. Floyd valiantly fought a nearly five year battle with cancer, demonstrating the entire
time his motto that “Crumps don’t quit.” But even the mightiest warrior can only fight so long
and all of us who loved him are glad he is finally at peace.
Floyd was born to James and Ruby Crump on February 19th, 1964 in Williamsburg, VA, the
third of four boys. He lived a wonderful childhood in rural Williamsburg with his older brothers,
Junior and Ronnie (who greeted him in heaven) and his younger brother Troy, as well as
numerous cousins and extended family. After graduating from Lafayette High School, Floyd
enlisted in the US Army, a tour that took him to Alaska and eventually to Fort Lewis. It was
there he met Shaulah Fairley and with that union, Andrea Crump was born. Later, he met and
married Shelly (O’Laughlin) Crump and Andrew “AJ” and Alex joined the family. Floyd loved his
role as “Pops” and was also a father figure to Lawanna “Kiki” Ramirez and Demetris Billings, as
well as Stevie and Jessica Rogacki. He also was blessed and excited to be “Papa” to Xykayla
Crump, his granddaughter. His children’s success, and for those whom he considered his own,
was his most important goal in life. He was a devoted father who created a lifetime of memories
for his children camping, attending their church and sporting events, and visiting amusement
parks across the country. He was always just a call away, ready to tell stories, listen to the
tribulations, and offer wisdom to help all whom he considered to be his children through this
crazy life.
Floyd worked for many years in the IT industry, first at Microsoft and later at King County. He
was frequently called “the man who made work fun.” As one friend said, “You could not see
him for many months and when you did, it was like it was yesterday.” Those colleagues very
graciously donated many days of sick leave, which helped Floyd fight this battle. When not
working, Floyd liked to attend old school R&B concerts, hit the slot machines and play a
“friendly” game of spades. And every football season, it was going to be his beloved Redskins
year. He was also a yearly attendee at the Heart Association March in Seattle, often joined by
numerous friends and family.
Cancer is a wicked opponent and Floyd was blessed with friends who helped him navigate the
side effects of the disease and the treatments. His companion, Hilary Rodriguez, was with him
to the very end, with valuable assistance by Byron Williams, Shaulah Fairley and Keith Clarke.
The family is so grateful for the devotion to their father, friend and brother.
Floyd lived a large life. His infectious laughter and huge heart combined to create a passionate,
loving man who was taken too soon. We rejoice that he has found a place in heaven with his
parents and his brothers, we rejoice the legacy that he left through his children, and we rejoice
that he was such a large, positive part of so many lives. He frequently said, “Only the good die
young”--so sadly true.
Floyd is survived by his daughter, Andrea Crump of Tacoma and her daughter, Xykayla; his
sons, Andrew Crump of Pullman, Washington, and Alex Crump of Bellingham, WA; his brother,
Troy and Ingrid Crump of Charlottesville, VA and nieces Imani and Tori; LaShawn, R
onda and Ron Crump, Jr. of Maryland; his South Carolina brothers Leon, Roland and Edward
(dec.) Crawley; numerous cherished cousins, aunts and uncles and extended family.
A celebration of life will occur in May in Tacoma (TBD) at Maranatha Family Worship Center as
well as a memorial at the Shepperd Family Reunion in August in Williamsburg. We invite all
who knew and loved him to join us, not to mourn, but to celebrate a life well lived. A trust to
provide educational support to his granddaughter, Xykayla Crump, is being established and is
requested in lieu of flowers.
