Fern Lucille Harkness
Fern Lucille Harkness, age 88, passed away July 29, 2009 after a long battle with Alzheimer disease. Fern joins her husband Marion Everett Harkness who passed away in 1981. Marion was a retired Tacoma firefighter. She was born August 21, 1921 in Wagner, South Dakota to William and Maude DeNoma. Fern is survived by two sons, Mark Harkness and Mil Harkness both of Tacoma and daughter Susan Harkness-Williams of Sunriver, OR. Fern is also survived by daughter in law Linda Harkness and son in law David Williams. Fern leaves behind 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was a long time Tacoma resident. Fern was a home maker and active in her growing children's schooling. She also participated in the Women's Firefighter Auxiliary where she was a committed fund raiser for the organization. Mrs. Harkness regularly volunteered at the Tacoma General Hospital Burn Unit. Fern became very involved in her church where she made many new friends. She enjoyed reading, gardening, square dancing and travelling. Marion and Fern retired and became snow birds spending many months in the southwest. Fern Harkness was a mother, wife, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend and a force of nature. She will be missed. Please join us in celebrating Fern's life on Wednesday, August 5th at 11 am at Mountain View Funeral Home. The address is 4100 Steilacoom Blvd SW Lakewood, WA 98499. Following memorial services there will be a reception at the Mountain View Hall. Remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
