Evert Dewey Carter's Obituary
Evert D. Carter Junior “ SARGE” at 99 went to be with the Lord at 11:15 PM on March 9th at his home in Redondo Washington in the presence of his family.
He was a devoted, good and loving father, dear friend to the community.
Sarge was born December 13 1924 in Portland Oregon, to Evert and Lela Carter .
Sarge’ as he was commonly referred to by many who knew him would recount his life growing up about how he took care of his family hunting and also his early school years on the island how he would paddle his way to school on a boat.
He was a great shooter, and brought home game food often. He was officially a sharp shooter in the service.
He also worked in the Portland Shipyard after quitting school before later joining the United States Army for infantry training in 1942. He participated in the Liberation of the Pacific Islands including the Philippines. He was a 3 war military veteran who started his career during WWII, then Korea and finally in Vietnam.
Sarge was a hard worker and an accomplished soldier. As a soldier he dabbled in various roles ie store detective, lock smith, heavy equipment operator before later working at Todd Shipyard.
He belonged to the Boilermakers’ union, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American legion. Sarge volunteered at Seattle veterans hospital with USO at SeaTac airport and the honor guard at Tahoma veterans military cemetery for many years. He was also a Grand Marshal in the Burien 4th July Parade and also Participated in the Auburn Armed forces parade on several occasions.
His favorite Hymn is “The Old Rugged Cross”. We look forward to the Great Hope ahead when we all meet again in glory. We honor Him today and thank the Lord for the time he has blessed us with him. As a family, we were all baptized on the day NASA landed astronauts on the moon, July 20th 1969.
Sarge met his wife Arlene with whom they were married for 65 years in Bellingham Washington. Arlene our mother passed on in 2013 at 87 years old. We still miss her but Sarge missed her a lot.
Sarge is survived by a son Evert D. “Skip” Carter III, daughter Cathy Tolmich,, sister-in-law “Shirley Hethorn”, nieces, nephews great nieces , great nephews, cousins, family and friends.
