Evelyn P. Lowe's Obituary
Evelyn Paulette Lowe Evelyn was born December 26, 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Joseph and Edna Afflerbaugh and passed away peacefully at home to be with her Lord, June 29, 2012.
Her family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she lived until attending the University of Iowa. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, graduating in 1940 with a teaching degree in physical education.
After briefly pursuing a dancing career, she became a United Airlines stewardess and met her soon to be husband, Capt. Herbert Lowe, on one of her flights. After 53 years of marriage she was predeceased by Colonel Lowe, who had a distinguished and much decorated 30 year Army career, serving his country proudly in WW II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. After many assignments in places as varied as China, Japan, Washington, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Georgia and Washington, D.C., they retired from Fort Lewis and settled in Lakewood.
They loved to travel and did so frequently; visiting many countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. She lived a full, fit and independent life all of her 90 years and was an inspiration to her family and friends.
Evelyn was active in many clubs and organizations including Fort Lewis Officers' Wives, Alpha Chi Omega, Clipped Wings (Seattle and Honolulu), Republican Women, Washington Women Education and Employment and the Edward Rich Orthopedic Guild of which she twice served as president. She was a member of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club for over 40 years and played in the ladies 18 and 9-hole groups well into her 80's as well as being a regular at the duplicate bridge tables. She was a long standing member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Evelyn is survived by her brother Joseph Afflerbaugh, four children, Dr. Diane Ho- ward (David), John (Elizabeth), Patti Reifel (Jay) and Anne Kelly (Paul), nine grandchildren, Jon, Matt and Mark Howard, Jennifer and John Lowe, Emily and Hailey Reifel and Judith and Jacob Kelly and nine great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service in her honor at 2pm, Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Christ Lutheran Church, 8211 112th St. S.W., Lakewood, WA, 98498, with a reception to follow at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, 13204 Country Club Drive SW, Lakewood WA 98498.
