Evelyn Jane Names' Obituary
Evelyn (Sis) Jane Names was born on June 19th, 1917 in Tacoma Washington to Clinton and Jesse Johnson (Spencer). Sis passed away peacefully in her home on October 4th, 2014 at the age of 97. She has been reunited with the love of her life, Thomas Scott who passed away in December of 2004 and her beloved son, Richard Clinton who passed away in December of 2007 .
Sis attended Stadium High School. Following her education, she met and married Scott on November 9th, 1933. Their passion for athletics and the environment made the match an obvious fit. Shortly after their union, they started a family and had three children; Thomas, Clinton, and Paula. Together, they opened a sporting goods store, named Scott's Athletic Equipment, in Lakewood, WA which they owned and operated for over 30 years. Their enthusiasm for sports coupled with a love of youth inspired them to establish the Names Family Foundation, an organization which not only continues to influence thousands in the community of Pierce County but also has impacted lives outside the state of Washington.
Sis was an avid golfer. She spent much of her free time enjoying the sport and played well into her nineties. She not only liked to play, but also enjoyed watching professional golf on television. She and her husband joined Fircrest Golf Course in 1948 and she remained a member until her passing.
During their 71 years of marriage, Sis and Scott enjoyed spending their winters in Kauai, Hawaii, walking on the beach, playing golf, and finding peace in the tranquil place. They also loved the time that they spent in Rio Verde, Arizona where golf was another important aspect of their lives.
Sis extended this love of nature to her garden, where her talents blossomed. Her passion and understanding of plants produced incredible gardens and yards.
She enjoyed family gatherings at the beach where you could usually find her digging for clams to make into incredible clam chowder for the evening's feast. The beach was a sanctuary to Sis, in which she found beauty in everything. She was most at home watching the wildlife, including seals out on the rafts. In her later years, she was especially fond of watching the beautiful hummingbirds and families as they played in the bay.
Although Sis loved golf, wildlife and warm climates, it was her family she cherished most of all. She was a caring, involved mother who could be described as strong and courageous, yet tender. She truly valued the time spent surrounded by her family and friends.
Sis leaves behind her son Thomas (Meg) Names, daughter Paula Larkin.; 10 grandchildren, Erin Shagren, Rick Names, Beth Dobbs, Kappy Calkins, Monica King, Kim Hegardt, Trina Gohrick, Curtis Names, Aidan Cornell and Patrick Names. She is also survived by 24 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
