Eva Mae Thomas-Richardson's Obituary
Eve M. Thomas Richardson, born as Eva Mae Gaines, on May 5,1942 in Mobile, Alabama, the third child to the union of Joseph O. and Marie G. Gaines.
January 26, 2021 Eve went quietly into eternal rest. She grew up in Mobile, Alabama where she birthed all four of her children. As a young woman in the early 70’s, Eve pursued opportunities for her family by moving to Tacoma, WA. These pursuits proved to be fruitful as Eve created a lasting impact in her family’s life, as well as the greater Tacoma community. Her great passion for helping people led her to serve as an attending counselor at Rainier School, a center for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Eve was a true entrepreneur and Pioneer. She first found success in music and entertainment endeavors, owning a record shop, a restaurant and nightclub where she encouraged other African Americans to form businesses and create community.
Eve enjoyed cooking and especially preparing food for her community and loved ones. She was famously known for her block parties, and neighborhood chicken and fish fries which included all the southern sides and fixings. Eve was a leader who loved to serve and bring people together from all walks of life. As a founding member of the Hilltop Action Coalition and block leader, she worked towards bridging the gap between local police officers and her neighborhood.
She understood the importance of creating generational wealth and became a successful real estate developer, owning several properties in Hilltop and downtown Tacoma. A provider in many ways, Eve shared her love, gifts and talents caring for her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family. Eve was a natural showstopper with a bright smile who loved to dress fancy from head to toe, have a good time, and was known for her hats, shoes, purses, and long nails.
Eve was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jo Etta Sumrall, and brothers Joseph L. and Otis L. Gaines. She is survived by her sister Angie M. (Oscar) Chambers, children Wanda Thomas, Felicia Thomas, Bridgett (Lee) Rubin, and Peter Thomas (Marisa), by 11 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
