Today is Thanksgiving morning, 2015. Every year at the Thanksgiving table our family takes turns stating what each of us is thankful for. I will give thanks this year to the best teacher I ever had. Mr Reiber was my 5th grade teacher at Point Defiance Elementary school (Fall 1968 school year). That was a different era. Mr. Reiber wore a suit and tie ever day and the girls wore dresses. If Mr. Reiber had any favorites, the class did not know who they were. He was strict but fair. Our classroom was in the upper floor of the old wood schoolhouse that has long since been demolished. Mr Reiber made sure that we learned our lessons. He played baseball with us in the Spring and flag football in the Fall and he taught us the rules. What a fine man. I will always remember him fondly. My thoughts and prayers go out to Kathy & Carol and their families. I have great memories of your Dad and Mom along with both of you as next door neighbors on Bell Street. I remember that your Dad took great care of his roses and taught me about growing and caring for roses. I saw your Dad a couple of times at Tacoma Musical Playhouse. I am sorry for your loss. What a nice friendly man Gene was, Eileen and I always enjoyed having a conversation with him at most of the Banjo Club's functions. We will miss his friendly smile and happy countenance. Sorry for your loss Beverly, it's our loss too.

Beverly, I tried sending a note and it didn't seem to show up---I will try again. I send my deepest sympathy to you and the family. I know it is such a devastating time. Bev, I send you and the family my deepest sympathy on Gene's passing. I know it is a devastation for you. I know all of your "banjo club family" is with you now and always. One of the things I remember about Gene that always "cracked me up" was his reading of the "German Coffee" story. Nobody will ever do that as well as him. My thoughts and prayers are with you!!!!

Beverly, my sincere condolences to you and your entire family. I did not know Gene, having met him only at our Christmas parties. However, in reading about him, I can tell that he enjoyed quite a life! I know he will be missed.

Gene Reiber: Born May 30, 1930 MEMORIAL DAY,
Died September 30th, LABOR DAY

ELK 174 member for 45 years

Note picture: He could still get in his Army uniform at age 76.

Some priorities: Always looking for discounts, two for one, and an avid coupon clipper.

RASPBERRIES: Neutered with tender loving care. Transplanted from Bell street resident in 1992 to my home, still producing great berries.

Loved traveling. Many trips with HARRY HINZ travel group to Europe and Mexico
Many tours with Tacoma Musical Playhouse with Jeffery and John. Including Canada, New York, Las Vegas, San Diego

House Painter: Painted my large 4 square house, built in 1906. WHAT A FEAT. He would hang out of windows, hang over eves with poles attached to paint brushes. Neighbors and I were relieved when he was done. GOOD JOB!!

Health Issues: When handicapped with balance problems, post-knee surgery and other health issues--his spirit remained strong to the end. Dementia had its effect, but, Gene never forgot my name and called for me often.

Here is a story shared by Gene to evoke laughter:

Background: A company in Germany ordered coffee from an American company. While the coffee was in route a few bags split open, making it possible for rats to nest in them. The German company sent the following letter to the American company.

Schentlemens: Der last two pecketches ve got from you of coffee vas mit rattschidt gemixt. Der coffee may be gute enuff, but der ratt durds schboils der trade. Ve did not zee der rattschidt in der zamples vich you zent us.

It takes so viel [much] time to pik der ratt durds frum der coffee dat it's hardly wurt it. Ve order coffee clean and you schipt schidt mixt mit it. It vas mistake - ya? Ve like you to schip us der coffee in vun zack and der rattschidt in anudder - den ve mix to zoot der customer. Write blease if ve schoudt schipt dr schidt bek und keep der coffee, or if we schouldt keep der schidt und schip der coffee bek, or schip der whole schidden vorks bek. Ve want to do right in dis matter, but ve don't like all dis rattschidt bisness.
