THE LIFE OF ERICK KAMUYU GITAU
Birth and Early Life
Erick Kamuyu Gitau was born on October 29th 1966 in Kiambu County, Kenya. He was the beloved firstborn son of the late Mzee Brown Ng’ang’a Kamuyu and Mama Esther Wambui Kamuyu.
From an early age, Erick embodied a gentle spirit, humility, and a warm heart that endeared him to all who knew him. He grew up in a close-knit and loving family alongside his brothers, Michael Kamuyu and Edward Njonjo. Erick was a cherished nephew and cousin to many, and he maintained strong family bonds throughout his life.
To his nieces and nephews—including Keith, Kacey, and Wambui—he was not only an uncle but also a mentor, a source of encouragement, and a constant presence of love and support.
Erick’s devotion to his parents was remarkable. He held them in the highest regard and demonstrated unwavering respect and care for them throughout their lives. His love and reverence for his mother remained evident in the way he honored and supported her.
Education and Career
Erick began his educational journey at Rabai Primary School in 1973. Through dedication and hard work, he successfully completed his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) examinations in 1980.
In 1981, he joined Ofafa Jericho Secondary School, where he pursued his secondary education and
sat for his Kenya Certificate of Education (K.C.E.) examinations in 1984. Driven by a passion for practical skills and self-reliance, Erick later pursued training in mechanics at college. Upon completing his studies, he established himself as a skilled mechanic in Nairobi. His work was characterized by integrity, diligence, and professionalism, earning him the trust and respect of colleagues and clients alike.
In addition to his mechanical career, Erick demonstrated a strong entrepreneurial spirit by venturing into small businesses. Through his hard work and determination, he sought not only to improve his own livelihood but also to provide stability and opportunities for his family.
Family Life
In 1989, Erick met and married the love of his life, Joyce W. Kuria.
They were blessed with three wonderful children: Moureen Wambui, Brown Ng’ang’a Gitau, and Maryann Nyokabi.
Church Life
Faith played a central role in Erick’s life. He embraced his Christian faith early and remained steadfast in his spiritual journey. In 1988, he was baptized and confirmed at St. Philip’s Church in Jericho. Erick lived his faith through humility, kindness, and service to others. He believed in living out the teachings of Christ through his actions, always demonstrating compassion, generosity, and integrity in his interactions with those around him. His quiet yet steadfast faith was an inspiration to many.
Relocation
Erick began entering the green card lottery in 1995, determined to start a new life in the U.S. after 8 years of persistence, his efforts finally rewarded in 2005. A year later, Erick and his family relocated to the United States of America, where they established their home and continued building their lives together.
Occupation
From 2007 to 2010, Erick worked at a warehouse in Renton, Washington. Later, he worked in several positions as a Certified Nursing Assistant at facilities in Des Moines, Mercer Island, and Lakewood Assisted Living. He also worked at Virginia Mason in downtown Seattle in maintenance and cleaning services.
Accomplishments
In 2018, while still working part-time, Erick went to school to learn commercial vehicle driving. In January 2025, he enrolled at UEI College in Tacoma, Washington, to study heavy machinery, continuing to pursue new skills and opportunities.
Illness
In June 2025, Erick began experiencing health problems and went to Harborview Hospital in downtown Seattle, where he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. He began chemotherapy treatments at the University District Hospital in Seattle. The treatments were very difficult, and he became very ill from weekly chemotherapy sessions. His last chemotherapy treatment was on January 27, 2026.
Passing
After his final treatment, Erick’s health continued to decline. On February 24, 2026, he became very ill and was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, Washington. Two days later, on February 26, 2026, at around 3:52 p.m., Erick peacefully lost his battle with cancer.
Erick is survived by his wife and three beautiful children: Moureen, Brown, and Maryann.
We find comfort in the promise found in Revelation 21:4–5:
“And He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain anymore. The former things have passed away.”
“And the One seated on the throne said: Look! I am making all things new.” Also he says: “ Write, for these words are faithful and true.”
