Eric Martin Sater's Obituary
Eric M. Sater was born April 25, 1919 in Oakland California. Eric went to be with the lord and his wife Helen at 7 P.M.on April 2, 2007. His education consisted of Franklin Elementary School, Jason Lee Middle School and was a Graduate of Stadium High school back in 1937. Eric received an Accounting Degree from Knapp,'s Bus College.Eric worked in the Office Supply Business from 1940-41, after that he worked for the US ARMY from 1941-43. Eric was inducted into the ARMY in 1942, where he served in Wyoming, Utah, and Virginia. Eric was part of the first wave assault at Purple Beach Island of Leyte in the Philippines. Eric was also in the Okinawa Invasion and held off Kamikaze attacks as a 20 MM Gunner in Buckner Bay. Eric ran the Supply Operation in NAHA, and NAGO. In Okinawa, Eric survived a 150 MPH Typhoon, by taking shelter in a hillside tomb. 1945 Eric went to work for the ARMY at Ft Lewis. Transferred to Presidio of San Francisco in 1966 where he developed automated supply management systems. During the Vietnam War ,- he was on TDY to Japan, Okinawa, Taiwan, Vietnam, and stateside on numerous trips. In 1972 was transferred back to Presidio as an Inst Supply Officer, and then retired in 1973. From 1974-76 Eric did contract work for the ARMY. In 1982 Eric and his wife Helen started the program Seniors Against Crime which was part of the Tacoma Police Department. In 1988 Eric was named an Honorary Citizen of the City of Tacoma, by the Mayor, Doug Sutherland. Eric managed the PRO Shop at the Meadow Park Golf Course from 1988-1990. From 1994 to 2004 Eric served as a Crime Prevention Speaker for the City of Tacoma, the Tacoma Police Dept. and the Red Cross. Eric received numerous awards for his outstanding volunteer work in the community.Eric with his wife Helen were members of the following Clubs and Organizations,-Sertoma, Exchange, VFW, Elks Lodge, N.A.R.F., Retired Civil Service, AARP, and The Men,'s club at the Meadow Park Golf Course.Eric,'s hobbies consisted of playing Golf, taking pictures, bowling, playing the Organ, watching sports, taking trips with his wife Helen, spending time with his family, and working on the computer. Eric was married to his first wife Betty in 1940, where his daughter Sandi was born in 1943. Eric moved on to marry Helen on May 30, 1956 and took on the role as Step Dad to Shirley, Janine, and David. Eric will be joining Helen at Mountain View Cemetery, where she passed away back in January 26, 1992. Surviving family are Daughter Shirley Winder, Daughter Sandra Artru (Don), Daughter Janine Bennett (Dan), and Son David Messenger, Cousin Clifford Bartell. Six Grandchildren, Six Great Grandchildren. Eric has been an inspiration to many people, and we will miss him greatly.
