Emily Swartz Colen's Obituary
Emily Swartz Colen, long time Lakewood, Washington resident, passed away on November 8, 2020 at age 91.
She was born in York, Pennsylvania on August 2, 1929 as the youngest daughter of Stuard and Emily Boyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Virginia North, and by her husband Dr. John Colen. Emily is survived by her son William Swartz and wife Connie, daughter Jann Swartz and wife Nancy, daughter Joan Cormany and husband Dan, the children’s father Donald H. Swartz, granddaughter Jordan Havlin Swartz, grandson Bradford Swartz, and granddaughter Kaitlin Meeks and husband Tyler.
As a child, Emily found refuge and strength at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in York. Her faith in God guided her through difficult and joyous times, and she devoted talents and offerings to both Christ Lutheran and St. John’s Lutheran Churches in Lakewood. She was graduated from William Penn High School in York and put herself through x-ray technician school at Philadelphia General Hospital.
Emily enjoyed singing hymns and was passionate about the Christ Lutheran choir. In 2009, she resurrected the popular Handel’s Messiah community concert. Performing Broadway show tunes, art-collecting, and traveling Europe gave her great joy.
She was a loving and supportive wife and mother, as well as loyal friend, who showed us the importance and power of a hand-written note. Her inner strength and resilience are important lessons shared with all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests an offering made to Christ Lutheran Church or St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lakewood, WA.
