Ellen Ann Berger's Obituary
Ellen Ann Berger, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, went to be with the Lord on September 29, 2014, at the age of 91.
Ellen was born on July 8, 1923 in Tacoma, Washington, the daughter of Carl and Helena Schmechel and the second born of their 2 children. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Tacoma. After High School Ellen worked in the Tacoma ship yards during the Second World War.
In 1944 when she was set up on a blind date by her sister Ruth, Ellen met Allert Berger. They were married on April 5, 1945, and after the war ended they settled in Tacoma where Allert started A.E. Berger Construction, which he ran successfully for 61 years until his retirement in 2006.
Ellen loved quilting, cooking, gardening, and during her years married to Allert, enjoyed many outings in their travel trailer camping and exploring much of the United States and Canada.
Together with her husband Allert, Ellen faithfully attended Parkland Lutheran Church where she served as a member of the congregation for 55 years.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Allert and her sister Ruth, and is survived by her daughter and her husband, Dr. Thomas and Faye Jonez of Gig Harbor, WA, her granddaughter Aneliese Herstad with husband Andrew Herstad, her brother-in-law Vernon Berger, and her seven beloved nieces and nephews and their children. She was most recently a resident of Harbor Place at Cottesmore in Gig Harbor, Washington.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 7th at Parkland Lutheran Church at 2:00 PM. Officiating the service will be Ellen’s pastors, the Reverend Glenn Obenberger and the Reverend Peter Faugstad. Memorial contributions may be made in Ellen's memory to Parkland Lutheran Church and School.
