Elizabeth Ann Schmalz's Obituary
After a valiant 18-month battle, Elizabeth Ann Schmalz, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, succumbed to pancreatic cancer on Sunday, May 9, 2010. Ann, the second daughter of Donald E. and Helen Dodds Dooley, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She moved with her family to Tacoma, Washington in 1949. She lived on Steilacoom Lake until her graduation from Lakes High School in 1966. She attended WSU before beginning a career at the Bank of Washington Travel Center. She married Richard F. Schmalz on June 14, 1969. After 9 years, Ann and Dick welcomed a wonderful "flu bug," Jennifer Ann, on Ann's birthday, 1978. Their second miracle, Richard Fulton Jr., was born in 1984. Her family was always her greatest love and she enjoyed boating and traveling with them. Her galley aboard the "Injoy" was a gourmet delight despite its 2 X 2 foot preparation space, as she adored cooking. Ann maintained a love/hate relation with golfing as she attempted to improve her backstroke. Ann found her vocation in banking, following in her father's footsteps. She was a teller at the Bank of Washington and the American Savings Bank. When ASB merged with the Bank of America, Ann's success as a bank officer, was rewarded with the title of Vice President; Banking Center Manager of the B of A branch in Shelton, Washington. Her efficient and friendly style has greatly influenced her son and daughter-in-law who are bank officers in Bank of America, Oregon. Ann was very active in the P.E.O. Sisterhood and in the formation of Evergreen Presbyterian Church (Graham, Washington). Her lifelong friends in PEO Chapters GC, IY and HS will miss her enthusiasm and commitment to women's education and sisterly love. Her generosity of spirit and sense of humor easily drew others to her. Ann enjoyed her Kiwanis membership in Shelton, Washington, especially the work days at St. Albans Girl Scout Camp, where she had been a camper as a child.
Ann is survived by her mother, Helen D. Dooley; her husband, Dick; her children, Jennifer and Chris Rhyne, and Rich and Michaela Schmalz; and her granddaughter, Emilee Rhyne. She will be deeply missed by her siblings: John (Laurie) Dooley, Mary (Lowell) Larsen, Meg Dooley, JoMary (Dave) Thompson, Terry (Joan) Schmalz, Janet (Jerry) Ackerman, and Robert Schmalz. Her presence will be missed by a multitude of nieces and nephews, as well as, grand-nieces and nephews.
Gifts in celebration of her life may be made to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, to Pancreatica.org (or ToFightCancer.com) or to the Kiwanis Chapter of Shelton, Washington. Services will be held at Mt. View Funeral Home at 5:00 PM on Thursday, May 13, 2010, in the Valley Chapel with a reception following in their Celebration of Life Center.
