Edward Santiago Yockman's Obituary
Our beloved father, grandfather (Papa), great grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother and uncle, Edward Santiago Yockman, Sr., 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on June 18, 2010. He was born in Pu'unene, Maui on June 23, 1924 to Julian and Rebecca Yockman-Gattock. Edward met and married the love of his life, Elda Winona Neal on Aug. 5, 1944 in Maui. She preceded him in death in 1997. They were married for 52 exciting years and had 10 wonderful children together. Our dad, Ed, was also preceded in death by his sisters, Priscilla Waiohu, Lee Roque, and Janet Tabelisma. Ed was a Golden Glove boxer while serving in the United States Army and all of his children and grandchildren learned the "left-hook, right-hook, upper cut." His tour of duties include WWII, Korea, and France; retiring in 1965 after 20 years of service for his country. He loved being with his family celebrating all occasions, especially his birthdays! He was an accomplished gardener and woodcarver, making a memorable mirror, complete with drawer, so his wife could see her hair as she curled it with pink sponge rollers. He loved collecting Oopihi shells and coins, a consuming passion that he thoroughly enjoyed. Ed is survived by four sons: Joseph Wayne (Judy) of Ewa Beach, HI; Ed Jr.; Eric Charles (Bonnie); Elvan Jay (Susan), all from Lakewood, WA. His six daughters: Edwina Winona (Willie B.) Smith of Columbus, GA; Elaine Viva Masterman (Mike Guffey); Erainer Rebecca Yockman, Tacoma; Elvia Vivian (Dennis) Kantzer, Gig Harbor; Evalani Authurette (Nana) Yockman; Eileen Clariss (Samuel) Eddleman, also of Lakewood, WA. He is also mourned by his sisters, Soledad Obado, of Lana'i, HI; Mary Tom of Maui, HI, and brothers, Moses Tabelisma of South Carolina and Rudy (Sheila) Tabelisma of Los Angeles, CA. He has 27 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends too numerous to count. Papa was a member of Soka Gakkai International-USA since 1965 as well as a member of the Hawaii 50th Club. We wish to extend our special thanks to Tony and Faye Sanchez and the nursing staff at St. Clare Hospital and Hallmark Manor for the outstanding care given to our father. Please understand that in this time of loss we may have neglected to mention someone who particularly stood out, but know that our love and deep appreciation are genuine and heartfelt.
Ed's service will be held this Sunday, June 27, 1 p.m. in the Valley Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home. We ask that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society , Relay For Life , Attn. Yockman Ohana Angels, 1313 Broadway, Suite 100, Tacoma, WA 98402.
