Edmund Jacob Casler's Obituary
Edmund Jacob Casler, age 98 of Tacoma, Washington died on June 10, 2008 in Seattle, Washington. He was born in Tacoma on October 18, 1909 to Albert and Caren Marie Christiansen.
A member of the class of 1926 Yakima High School, he met his future bride Esther Maribeth Smith at Yakima Business School. They were married for over 63 years. Ed served in the Army during World War II. He and Esther then moved to the Tacoma area and lived in Fircrest (Tacoma), creating a loving family home for all of the family that were fortunate to receive their warmth and love.
Preceded in death by his parents, 3 siblings, Albert, Verona and Minnie, and his beloved wife Esther in January 1997. He is survived by his brother-in-law Byron L. Smith of Yakima. As he and Esther had no children, all the nieces and nephews were their favorites. Surviving are nieces Margaret Gause and husband Paul, Cathy Casler Kenyon and husband Dave, Ann Smith Cooper, Janet Smith Ellis and husband Blaine, Barbara Smith Gilbert and husband Cragg, Val Lynch and husband Pat Barber, and Margaret Erwin. Nephews include Paul Lutz and wife Irma, Bob Smith and fiance Ilona, Chris Smith and wife Jeanette, and Dan Smith and wife Star. He also had four grand-nieces and 11 grand-nephews.
Ed was of quick wit, thoughtful philosophy, loved books, cats (Susy Q the cat resides in Yakima), flowers, pickled herring, opera and was a humble master of crossword puzzles, especially the New York Times Sunday edition.
Ed was a member of the meat cutters union #367, 1st Congregational Church of Tacoma, and the Tacoma Elks. He served on the Board of Directors of Goodwill and the FISH program. He moved to Yakima in 2006, staying with Barbara and Cragg Gilbert, returning to Seattle in 2007 to stay with Ann Cooper and residing at Merrill Gardens at Admiral Heights in West Seattle.
