Vernon 'Duffy' Reed's Obituary
Vernon Chauncy Reed, 85 and known to everyone as Duffy, died peacefully June 26th in Lacey Washington, with his family at his side. He was born April 27th to Claudia and Vernie Reed and raised with younger sisters, Sharron and Pamela, in Tacoma, Washington. He graduated from Stadium High School and then enlisted in the Navy, where he trained and thoroughly enjoyed being assigned aviator machinist’s mate, building and repairing engines and learning to fly.
Following his service, he married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Smith and had four children, Vernie Reed, Robert Reed, Sharon MacLaine and Paulia Gima. During this time Duffy began his lifelong career with Foss Maritime, following in the footsteps of his uncle and grandfather, Captains Samuel Emmerson, Jr and Sr respectively. He retired, also as captain in 1995, after 32 years at sea. He has been married to Val Reed for the last 28 years, with whom he had 2 step children, Tino Campos and Kristenrain Dineen. Duffy taught Val to ride, and they had many happy years with their horses and even a few wins in the arena. Sadly, Val preceded him in death only 25 days before his own passing.
He is survived by 12 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and many deep friendships, especially the family of Don and Gertie Landis. The Puget Sound was Duffy’s “happy place” and he navigated the waters and those as far north as Alaska, with a steady hand, deep respect and an infinite love of the beauty of his home, the Pacific Northwest, a love that is shared throughout his family.
