Dr. William H. Martin's Obituary
William H. Martin, a long-time Tacoma resident and physician, passed away on February 11, 2013, after an extended illness. He was born in Clarinda, Iowa, on March 28, 1941, to Albert and Helen Martin.
Dr. Martin attended Knox College and the University of Illinois College of Medicine where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his internship and residency at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center during the Viet Nam War where he received specialized training in trauma medicine. After retiring from active duty in the Army, Dr. Martin established Mt. Rainier Surgical Associates in Tacoma and became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He will be remembered as an exceptionally skilled and competent healer who loved the practice of medicine and his patients.
Dr. Martin was an adventurer, curious about the world, who explored through mountaineering, biking, diving, and travel. His travels took him by foot to mountain peaks in three continents; by ship across oceans; and by road and rail in search of great food and wine. He found a creative outlet in playing music and passed that love of great songs on to his family. Sports were another passion, from his beloved Mariners to the soccer games of his children and grandchildren.
Above all, he loved his family. Dr. martin is survived by his wife Karyl; his children Patricia (Sean) McRitchie, Michael Martin, Sara (Jeff) Jones, and Chloe Martin; stepchildren Courtney (Jimmy Rumsey) and Patrick Bohrer; grandchildren Aidan, Ava, Asher, Ella, Sadie and Esme; sister Debra (Jim) Bryant and brother James (Betsy) Martin. He will be greatly missed.
Memorial services to celebrate Dr. Martin's life will be held at 1:00 pm on March 22, 2013, in the Aspen Chapel at the Celebration of Life Center. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
