Douglas Wayne Miller's Obituary
Douglas Wayne Miller of Spanaway, WA died peacefully in his sleep on July 5, 2017. It was his 70th birthday.
Born July 5, 1947, in Hazard, KY, to Eston and Lona Miller, an Army family, he spent two early years of his life in Germany. His family moved many times throughout his childhood, finally settling in Tacoma, WA. Wayne attended Stadium High School, graduating in 1965. He worked briefly at Boeing Aircraft Company, and in June 1966, enlisted in the US Air Force, serving for 22 years. His specialty was Aircraft Instrument Systems Technician. He served in Vietnam, Germany and Korea, returning each time to McChord Air Force Base in Washington State.
His service awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Vietnam Service Medal with 3 bronze service stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon, and Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Phyllis K. Miller and her husband, Travis B. Thomas of North Carolina. His family of the heart include Karen Thomas Litchfield; Michael Thomas, of Missouri; and Tim and Linda Thomas of Tacoma, Washington. They are the children of James E. Thomas, beloved companion of Wayne’s mother, Lona Gray Miller.
Cherished friends include Jerry and Lynn Robinson and their daughter, Christie McMahill, Duane Schweigert, Heather Rydberg, and Sue and Glenn Thompson.
Douglas Wayne Miller was a kind and loving man who always tried to treat others with respect and affection. Although disabled for the last two decades of his life, he maintained a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed life.
He is predeceased by a younger brother, Glenn D. Miller and both parents, Eston David Miller and Lona Gray Stallard Miller.
A small, private memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to your local food pantry.
