Dorothy Blanche Kuper's Obituary
Dorothy Blanche Kress Kuper was born June 18, 1919 in Pauline, Nebraska and passed away May 10, 2016 at Franciscan Hospice House in University Place. She graduated from Silverdale High School in 1936. During most of her life, she lived in Tacoma; then during the past four years, she resided in the Brookdale assisted living facility in Gig Harbor.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters Kathy (Ted) Lundquist and Marcia (Paul) Berg and her brother Don (Ann) Kress. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, daughter Karen, and friend and companion Jack Anderson. Her family also includes 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her work experience concluded after being employed as an Internal Revenue Service auditor for 20 years. Taking bus tours to casinos and spending time at her ocean condo were highlights after retirement. Dorothy loved to play cribbage, bridge and pinochle. She enjoyed organizing and playing bridge at various local senior centers. When gardening, she would keep a tally of the number of cherry tomatoes she was able to harvest each summer. As a Seattle Mariners fan, she regularly watched their games on TV and could recite statistics about key players, especially Jamie Moyer.
Dorothy dedicated time every month to visit with Karen and take her on lunch outings. Family members fondly remember her cooking skills, as she would bake red chocolate cakes for birthdays, chocolate fudge for Christmas, and make the gravy for every turkey cooked on holidays. “You can’t cry over spilt milk” was repeated to her children many times, as she believed you should correct mistakes, put them behind you, and moved forward in life.
Graveside burial will be Friday, June 17, 1:30 at Mountain View Cemetery in Lakewood, with a reception following in the Willow Room of the Celebration of Life Center at the cemetery.
Family suggests donations that support Alzheimer’s research, such as Alzheimer’s Association, North Tower, 100 W Harrison St N200, Seattle, WA 98119 or www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp
