Dorothea "Dottie" Marguerite Kent's Obituary
Born November 26, 1918 in Tacoma, WA; died July 12, 2017 at age 98. Dottie was the older of two children born to Gladys and Joseph Mahoski of Tacoma, WA. Dottie spent most of her 98 years in Tacoma, working as a florist and at Western State Mental Hospital teaching art therapy.
Dottie graduated from Stadium High School in 1936 and married Fred Kent the following year on October 30, 1937 at a ceremony in her family home. They were married 61 years until his death at age 87 on December 19, 1998.
Dottie is survived by her son Dennis Kent (Marcia); two granddaughters Kari Baerny (Todd) and Trina Cottingham (Evan); and one great-granddaughter, Natalie Hayes. Dottie is also survived by her longtime friend Russell Heglund, her two nieces Mary Jo Travis (Jim) and Terry Newton (Dan), nephew Michael Mahoski (Shannon); great niece Jennifer Larsen (Steve); great great nephew Caleb and great great niece Maple. Dottie was predeceased by her husband, Fred; parents Gladys and Joseph Mahoski, brother Joseph Mahoski and sister-in-law Ruth Mahoski.
Dottie loved art and was a talented painter, knitter, ceramist and seamstress. She also enjoyed playing the Hammond organ and was a founding member of the Tacoma Organ Club. She had a hug and kiss ready for everyone she met; especially her family and friends. Her joy for life, endless love and smile will be missed by all who knew and love her.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Old Town Music Society from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.
