Doris Ruth Thomas' Obituary
Doris R. Thomas 1922 - 2013 The Lord called our mom home on December 14, 2013 at the age of 91. As an only child, Doris Ruth Feagin was born on April 27, 1922 to Lincoln and Ruth Feagin in Birmingham, AL. She was raised to be a well-rounded young lady, learning poetry, piano, and dance. She graduated from A.H. Parker High School in 1940 and then attended Tuskegee Institute. Doris then moved to South Bend, IN, where she met her future husband Bradley F. Thomas. Doris and Bradley married in 1949, and the military relocated them to Tacoma, WA, where they settled on Ash Street to raise their four daughters, Carol, Lynda, June and Vicky. In addition to her mom duties of running the house, Doris had other passions as well, including fashion, music, and watching old movies. Always a stickler for education, Doris continued her own schooling and graduated from the School for Medical Record Technicians at St. Joseph Hospital in 1966. She then started her career at St. Joseph's Hospital, where she worked for over 20 years, retiring at the age of 70. Doris was feisty, outspoken, and fiercely independent, and raised her girls to be the same. Doris was active in her community and enjoyed the friendships she created with the Matrons Club ladies, Contessa Club, Stanley Elementary PTA, and McCarver's reading tutoring program. As a devout Christian, she was a member of Allen AME Church for over 50 years and had participated in the Women's Missionary Society and Sunday School Department. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, mom spent her last 13 years at the Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Community. The family gives a heartfelt thanks to all of the caregivers and staff at Tacoma Lutheran for the great care they took with our mom. Your care, love, and devotion is greatly appreciated. Doris was preceded in death by her mother, father, and former husband Bradley. She leaves behind her beloved daughters Carol Hill, Lynda Thomas, June Berring, and Vicky T. Robinson, grandchildren Robert Garrett, Damon Hill, Shauna Hill-Martin, Ricky Jamison, and Brian Jamison, and a host of great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 3-7pm Friday, December 20, 2013 at Mountain View Funeral Home. A memorial service and reception will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Allen A.M.E. Church, 1223 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Tacoma WA 98405. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association , or to Tacoma Lutheran Home at 1301 N. Highlands Parkway, Tacoma, WA 98406 in memory of Doris R. Thomas
