Doris Jean Tengesdal's Obituary
Doris Jean Tengesdal (Williams), age 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Tacoma on June 29, 2010. She was surrounded by her children who had cared for her since their father, George Tengesdal, passed in 2005. Doris was born to William and Ella Williams in Tacoma, where she was a lifelong resident. She attended Tacoma schools and graduated from Lincoln High in 1937. She attended the University of Washington, until she ran out of money, one credit short of earning her degree. However, many years later Doris's children and husband surprised her with her Bachelors diploma in Business and Economics which was granted by the University of Washington. Following college Doris worked for the City of Tacoma and the Tacoma Times. During WWII she also volunteered with the USO where she served donuts and coffee and danced - she loved to dance. She was a longtime member of the Tacoma First Baptist Church, where she married George after the war, She made her wedding dress from silk George brought home from Japan where he served with the U.S. Army of Occupation. She also served as the church financial secretary for many years.
In addition to her husband, Doris is preceded in death by her brother Bill Williams, and is survived by her brother Vern Williams (Patty), son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Nancy Tengesdal, her daughter, Pamela Robinson, five grandchildren, one great granddaughter, numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. Mom is greatly missed.
A memorial service and reception will be held on August 5, at 2 pm at Mountain View Funeral Home, Aspen Chapel, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. S.W. The family asks that donations be made to Urban Grace Church (formerly First Baptist), Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, Pierce County Humane Society, or your favorite charity.
