Her true treasures were her 7 Grandchildren and 14 Great-grandchildren who adored her as GG and a very special GG she was!
She also leaves behind her sister-in-law Darlene Thomas, cherished, lifetime friend Patti Frantz and devoted niece Pam Holder.
Diana was preceded in death by her beloved husband Shorty (Al) Goodwin, parents Ralph and Laura Wood, sisters Velma and Phyllis, brother Joe and his wife Lucille.
Diana was born in Benkelman, Nebraska, a small, Midwestern town, population of less than 2,000 as it still stands today. Her family moved to Tacoma Washington in 1941 during World War II. She was seven years old. Arriving at Union Depot in Tacoma was extremely overwhelming.
It was a scary time for a child seeing blackout curtains, food rationing, and air-raid drills. A way of life she’d never witnessed and prayed she never would again.
The war created housing and food shortages. Her family was fortunate to have relatives to stay with. They lived at Fogel’s Corner in Eatonville, WA with her Aunt Lela and Uncle Tot.
They were generous people and offered their home as shelter to many. There were times some slept on the floor on mattresses and shared their news of the war. It was a time where everyone did their part. Diana was so proud of her job in the household. She would knead the tubes of imitation butter to release the yellow dye to make it appear authentic.
Grandpa Wood(y), her father, was a barber. Within a short while he was able to open a new barbershop on Pacific Avenue and they were able to move into their own home in Tacoma. At this time, Diana attended Mary Lyon elementary school.
Prior to starting junior high the family move to their permanent home on Fawcett Avenue.
She attended Stewart Jr High where she met her forever love Shorty (Al) Goodwin in the 8th grade.
They were married 69 years. A love story totaling 75 years.
Diana attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 1953. She focused her studies on business courses, receiving a wonderful recommendation. She was employed at B. A. McKenzie, a customs house brokerage in downtown Tacoma. She thoroughly loved her job.
Diana and Al we’re married August 28, 1953. Rather than pursue her career, she chose marriage, home and family.
This was a happy young household. Family dinners, camping, Sunday drives, and school events. A home filled with “Happy Noise” of children growing up and finding their way.
Diana was active in PTA, church activities, always happy to lend a hand.
Mom was a devoted wife supporting Dad in his career as a meat cutter. She worked by his side as his partner. In time, they created their own business.” Al’s Market” retiring in 2008.
Her passions in life included: cooking alongside Dad - with the annual debate of the 30-pound turkey, quilting, painting, Bible study and monthly pinochle with friends.
Diana was known for her sense of fashion and loved shopping for all the newest styles. She loved the opportunity to pick that special outfit for her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Beaming with pride seeing them all dressed up.
Mom & Dad were wonderful parents, but as grandparents and great grandparents is where they truly shined.
Favorite memories of Grandma are the awesome back rubs, camping at Hoods Canal, crabbing and watching her out-fish Papa, always followed with a beautiful meal from the catch of the day.
Motorhome trips with Grandma and Papa were always the best of times.
Grandma loved baking cookies with her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and neighbors.
Afternoons at GG’s meant milkshakes or ice cream sundaes. All served with lots of fun and laughter.
She was a wonderful cook and wanted us to learn the family recipes.
You never left GGs without a hug and a kiss and a full stomach.
Mom’s greatest gift was that of love and laughter.
Special memories of GG and Papa was watching their beautiful dancing. Truly a lesson in time of how to treat your partner.
We are blessed to have known her as wife, mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. A gift very few receive.
We send our love knowing you are re-united with Daddy, dancing amongst the stars, together forever.
