Denny N Berglund's Obituary
Denny Norman Berglund
5/5/1923 - 9/27/2017
Denny's father, Arthur Lawrence Berglund, and mom, Ina Blanche Cooper, were married in Montesano, WA in 1915. His father was a shingle weaver at the Panama Lumber and Shingle Co. in Olympia, WA. The family moved to Tacoma, WA around 1920 where Arthur joined the Tacoma Police Department. He was a member of the first automobile patrol. Arthur retired in late1930's.
Denny was born at the family home on North 29th Street in Tacoma. His three older siblings were Lawrence Burglund, Pauline (Berglund) Knapp, and Harold Berglund.
Denny attended Lincoln High School from 1939-1941. He was well-liked by his classmates. He enjoyed track, and earned letters in sophomore and varsity football.
After graduating from high school, he worked for a few months as a shipfitters helper, assisting in fitting plates on ships. He joined the Navy on February 19,1943, and completed a 16-week course at the Cooks and Bakers School in Farragut, Idaho. The class included menu making, arithmetic and spelling. He graduated 23rd in his class of 61 students.
He was active during WW II in Shoemaker, CA as a cook, and honorably discharged January 6, 1946.
He married MaryLou Rose May 14, 1948 at Bethesda Baptist Church in Tacoma. Shortly after their marriage, they moved into their home on S. G Street in Tacoma, where they resided the rest of their lives. Their daughter Cindy was born in 1952, and son Mark was born 13 years later in 1965.
Denny retired from Pasquire Panel in Sumner, WA as a foreman.
He was a man of simple tastes, including a good cigar. He enjoyed fishing with his son Mark, woodworking in his shop, and hosting Christmas Eve for family and friends. He appreciated a good football or baseball game; whether he was watching them on tv, or listening on his radio. In his later years the family would gather for Saturday breakfasts at local restaurants around town. He was very independent, even at 94 years of age.
Denny was very quick-witted, and often made people chuckle with his humor. He enjoyed a few sayings over the years including “Get a job”, and “If you can’t pay cash for it, you can’t afford it”.
He was preceded in death by wife Marylou; parents Arthur and Ina; siblings Lawrence, Pauline, and Harold.
He is survived by children Cindy (Darren) Middleton and Mark (Lynn) Berglund; grandchildren Janelle (Jeremy) Cowart, Alana Middleton, and Jenna Berglund; and great-grandson Landyn Cowart. Also many nieces, nephews, and close family friends.
A celebration of his life will be held 1:00 Friday, October 27 at the Aspen Chapel in the Mountain View Celebration of Life Center, followed by a graveside committal service with Military Honors. A reception will be held afterward in the Willow Room in the Mountain View Celebration of Life Center.
