Dear Jean & Family,
As the little brother of Mary-Lee I had the pleasure of meeting the Rowlands Family at an early age. I'll never forget when my fourth grade class took a tour of the County-City Building. During our tour Dave took time out from his busy schedule to say hello and greet us. He was just that kind of a man, very special and always taking time out for others. It didn't matter if you were a fourth grader or a United States Senator, Dave treated everyone the same. Dave and Sally graciously served our community for many years and contributed a great deal to the betterment of Tacoma. However, their greatest accomplishment will be their legacy of love that they have passed along to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mr. Rowlands, also known as "Big Blue", had a wonderful memory which usually focused on sports. In the early eighties he and his son John played Bob Burgess and I in a doubles match. Bob was an A player as was John and I was, maybe a low B, but Bob and I thought we had this match in the bag. It turns out that Mr. Rowlands was quite competitive and surprisingly good. "The big guys", as Mr. Rowlands called us, lost the match and from then on he never let us forget about it. Mary Alice and I will miss him and his good natured banter. Kit and I were saddened by the news of Dave's passing. We were fortunate to be able to play bridge with Dave in the past few years and were amazed at his ability to play well with very limited eye sight. His intellect at very advanced years was also quite amazing.
He will be missed by all who knew him.

It has been a few years since I lived on North Yakima...I loved visits from Mr. Rowlands...he had great stories to tell...I hope they are recorded somewhere! He told me often of his time in the Cavelry...now I ride horses and I can begin t understand the love and respect he was feeling for those great animals. I wish I had known him better...there is comfort for all knowing that all his wonderfulness will live on in his children and grandchildren...all the lives he touched! Ã¢â‚¬Å“Big DaveÃ¢â‚¬Â was the patriarch of a great Tacoma family that also felt like part of my own family. As a kid, my brother Steve, sister Diane, and parents Herb and Nadine and I spent many holidays and everyday family dinners at the Rowlands Ã¢â‚¬â€œ with Dave presiding over boisterous family gatherings, playing basketball and ping pong competitively, or challenging us in just about any activity. It was always a welcome and comfortable place throughout our lives. Later in life, my mother Nadine became Big DaveÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s bridge partner Ã¢â‚¬â€œ always complaining about DaveÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s overly competitive play but at the same time being comforted that some things never change.
