Darrell Anthony Alston's Obituary
Brother Darrell Anthony Alston was born on January 13, 1955 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the late Moses and Irene Alston. Brother Alston was called home to glory on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at 10:30 AM at his home in University Place, Washington. He was preceded in death by his mother Irene Gray Alston, mother-in-law Johnora Green, sister Barbara Jean Alston and his brother Kirklyn Jerome Flournoy.
Brother Alston was raised in Fort Lauderdale and he was educated in the Broward County school system. He was a member of the inaugural graduating class from Boyd H. Anderson High School in 1973. At an early age, Brother Alston accepted Christ and was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist Church located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was an active member of various activities in the church to include the church sponsored Boy Scouts of America club. He went on to join the United States Army in 1974.
Brother Alston served proudly and professionally in the United States Army for 20 years. He was honorably discharged and retired in 1994 at the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his years of service, Brother Alston received numerous awards, unit citations and accommodations for his dedicated service.
In 1982, Brother Alston united in marriage with Jannie Green (aka Sam), his soul mate of 32 years. After retiring from the military, Darrell and Jannie remained in the Seattle/Tacoma area; finally establishing their home in University Place, Washington.
Brother Alston remained active during his retirement, taking on several different volunteer and paid jobs to include working as a volunteer Hazmat Fire Inspector at the Lacy Fire Department. He also worked for Alaska Airlines and the United States Postal Service.
Brother Alston later joined Shiloh Baptist Church and became very active in the Communication, Security, Laymen’s Ministries and Wednesday Night bible study. However, his true love and dedication was to the Recovering Ministry. Brother Alston took the initiative to do things around the church that were needed including collecting fans and managing lost-and-found items.
Brother Alston is survived by a host of family and friends to cherish his memories. Most notably he leaves behind his wife and soul mate, Jannie Green Alston. Sisters: Chauncey Alston Moore (Joe) of Alexandria Virginia. Lawanda Ann Alston of Roosevelt, New York, and Carla Denise Thornton (Dave) of Fort Lauderdale Florida, brothers: Isaiah Eugene Gray of Hephzibah, Georgia, Johnny Lewis Alston of Fort Lauderdale Florida, and Dwayne Flournoy (Vicki) of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, god-daughter: Jenna Bouyer, Father-in-law: Lewis Green (Levita), Sister-in-Laws: Louise Roberts (Ronald) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Juliet Strauther (Scofied Wright) of St. Louis, Missouri, brother-in-laws: Larry Green (June), James Green, Ronald Green of St. Louis, Missouri and Donald Green (Regina) of Tacoma, Washington.
