Lt. Colonel (ret) Joseph E. Green Jr.
Lt. Colonel(ret) Joseph Edward Green Jr. was born in Florence, South Carolina,
on July 29, 1934, to the union of Joseph and Natalie Green (deceased). His
sisters, Georgia Mae, Gladys, and Delores, preceded him in death.
Joseph attended the Florence School System and graduated from Wilson High
School. He received his BA Degree from North Carolina A & T State University in
Greensboro, North Carolina, and his M.S. from Pepperdine University.
Joseph enlisted in the United States Air force in August 1952 and served four
years, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He re-entered the USAF in October
1961 after being commissioned a 2Lt. through the ROTC Program at N.C.A.&T.
State University. He served another twenty years retiring in 1982 with the rank
of Lt. Colonel.
During his military service, Joseph served at overseas bases in Japan, Pakistan,
Vietnam, Korea, and numerous stateside bases. He was awarded several
medals, including the Bronze Star with Valor. After military service, he was
employed by the Tacoma School District as a math teacher at Gray Middle
School, retiring in 1994.
Joseph met Mary Dudley in 1960. They were married in 1963 and had three
children, Kecia, Joseph III, and Kimberly.
Joseph’s greatest love was his family, relatives, church, friends, and golf. He
enjoyed all sports. He was an active member of Allen AME Church and served as a
trustee and member of the brotherhood until his health began failing.
His Masonic affiliation began in January 1996 as a member of Arthur Ury Lodge
#73, Tacoma, Washington, and Yemen Temple. Cascadian Consistory #75 in
1997 initiated him into the Scottish Rite. He also received the 33 °Masonic
Degree in May 2000 in Philadelphia. He has served as Worshipful Master, Thrice
Potent Master, and Second Lieutenant Commander. He is a long-time member
of the Northwest Chapter of the Phylaxis Society.
Joseph’s community service activities include being a high school mentor,
member of the NAACP, bible study leader, and trustee at Allen AME, Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, Tuskegee Airmen, American Legion, N.C. A&T
Alumni Association, The African American PTSD Association and the Military
Officers Association.

His beloved wife, Mary, of 60 years, and Sons, Michael (Margaret) of
Jacksonville, Fla, Joe Green III (Laura)of Denver, Colorado; Daughters: Kecia
Stringfield of Graham, WA, and Dr. Kimberly Green of Duluth, GA.; one sister,
Betty Galloway of Florence, SC; one brother, Renaldo Green (Melinda) of
Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Deja Plowden, Anthony Stringfield (Angelica)
and Michael Green Jr; 6 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews,
cousins, and friends.
