Over many years of personally talking with Cliff at family gatherings, listening to family stories, looking at hundreds of family pictures and videos, watching him respond to the great joys of his family, as well as the numerous "hard stretches" of personal losses and deteriorating health, I was trying to think of a distilled way of sharing my impressions with all of you. Two thoughts came to mind. The first is a quotation I recently read, ascribed to Ernest Hemingway: "The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places." Cliff certainly was strong at the broken places. And the second involves a word I rarely have occasion to use on a personal level. Cliff had an indomitable spirit that took life by the horns and not only hung on for the ride, but never even considered the possibility of falling off. And he also left behind a very special legacy - the closeness of all of you, his family. You have gathered together from near and thousands of miles away, to support each other and to plan and work together on all the many details of honoring him with your love, talents, and your presence, in a spirit of family unity. Cliff will be as proud of you all today as he always was. May God's loving care ease your loss and equip each of you in His own way for the journey of healing and restoration you have already begun.##imported-begin##Karl & Patricia Stoll##imported-end##
You have my condolences. I know the feelings of loss when someone so close dies. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Sorry I cannot be there for the memorial.##imported-begin##Michael Coty##imported-end##
Cliff will be dearly missed here. He was so quick and witty and had us laughing often. I loved giving him a hard time and he was quick to give it right back. Although he had a large presence, inside he was just a big softie. He will always have a special place in my heart. I will keep Ethel and all the "D's" (his children) in my prayers. You will always have your own special angel watching over you.##imported-begin##Sharon at Rainier Oncology##imported-end##
