Clement J. Thomas' Obituary
Clement J. Thomas, a distinguished meteorologist and retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, in Lakewood, Washington. He was 87.
"Tom" was born in Superior, Wisconsin to Clement and Beatrice Thomas and pursued a life of intellectual rigor and service, earning a Bachelor's degree from Wisconsin State, a Master of Science in Research from St. Louis University, and later, an MBA from Pacific Lutheran University in 1984.
Clement's illustrious career in meteorology spanned decades. He served with honor and distinction in the United States Air Force for 21 years, retiring in 1981 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Among his many contributions, he was part of the meteorological team that supported the launch of Apollo 11—the first manned mission to land on the moon. His military service was recognized with numerous awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
Following his military career, Clement continued to make significant contributions to meteorological science for both Blue Origin and Boeing. He provided meteorological support for a variety of important aviation and aerospace projects including Boeing's Airborne Surveillance Test Bed, Condor high-altitude surveillance aircraft, and the Sea Launch program, which launched the well-known XM satellites.
Clement was married to the love of his life, Patricia, with whom he shared a deep and enduring bond. Together, they made their home in Lakewood, Washington, and enjoyed daily walks and quiet companionship. Patricia and their son, Scott, both preceded Clement in death.
He is survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Kriske, and will be remembered fondly by friends and colleagues as a quiet, kindly man whose intellect and humility left a lasting impression.
Clement’s legacy is one of dedication, excellence, and quiet strength. He will be deeply missed.
