Rev. Dr. Chester Aumua, beloved husband, father, pastor, grandfather, brother, uncle, friends and veteran, passed away peacefully at his home in Santaquin, Utah on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79.
Born on March 1,1946, in Pago Pago, American Samoa, Chester was one of ten students from the island to earn an academic scholarship to study in the United States. He graduated from Samoana High School and, despite early challenges adapting to life on the mainland, went on to live a life defined by faith, perseverance, and service to others.
After moving to Carson, California, Chester became deeply involved in church life, sharing his love of music by playing piano for worship services—he was known for his incredible ability to play any song by ear.
He enlisted in the United States Navy on May 27, 1969, serving honorably until May 26, 1976, and earning the National Defense Service Medal. During his service, he trained at the Aviation Fleet Preparatory “A” School.
Following his military service, Chester pursued his calling in ministry. He earned a Master of Divinity from Boston University in 1991 and later a Ph.D. from Claremont School of Theology.
Rev. Aumua joined the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1990 as a probationary member, becoming a full elder in 1992. Over the years, he faithfully served several congregations across Washington State, including: White Swan, WA: Wilbur Memorial and Wapato United Methodist; Seattle, WA: Beacon United Methodist, First Samoan United Methodist Church; Tacoma: Trinity United Methodist, Fern Hill United Methodist, Spanaway United Methodist; and finally in Tukwila: Riverton Park United Methodist (Samoan Fellowship).
Even after his retirement in 2013, Rev. Aumua continued to serve part-time at Riverton Park until 2022. His lifelong dedication to ministry reflected his deep faith and his commitment to uplifting others through compassion, understanding, and love.
Rev. Dr. Aumua is survived by his loving wife, Tia Aumua, and their children: Jason Aumua, Lisa Bernal-Wood, Faimalo Godkin, and Chester Jr. Aumua. He was preceded in death by his son, Christmas Aumua.
He will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his leadership in the church, his love of music, and his devotion to his family and community.
