Charlotte L. Meek's Obituary
Charlotte L Meek, SERVICES ARE CURRENTLY POSTPONED,88 of Gig Harbor Washington passed away peacefully on February 24 2020.
Born September 21 1931 in Seattle Washington to parents Redick & Myra Phelps, Charlotte grew up in the Green Lake area of Seattle and graduated from Seattle’s Lincoln High School in 1949. Charlotte attended the University of Washington but her true passion was the arts and she soon transferred to attend Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
While working as a bank teller in Seattle’s Wallingford District, she met Seattle Police Officer William R Meek; they married on March 3 1962. Charlotte & Bill resided in Seattle’s Broadview neighborhood where they had two sons; Terry born in 1967 and Todd born in 1969. Charlotte was a wonderful stay at home mother for her two sons. She was passionate about taking pictures and detailing every special moment of her boys’ lives until they reached school age, then she started working for Safeco Title Insurance in downtown Seattle.
The family enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Upper Preston Washington along Deep Creek and Raging River. They eventually made their cabin a home and moved there in 1977. A housewarming gift to themselves joined them, a newborn Poodle puppy they named Buttons who became Charlotte’s dearest companion for nearly 15 years. Charlotte started driving school bus for the Issaquah school district where she met many life long friends. She won many awards for her driving excellence. Charlotte was one of the main drivers for the sports team’s away games and a favorite to the athletic teams that Terry and Todd played on. Charlotte also enjoyed driving the kid’s up to the ski areas for ski school where she herself restarted her passion of skiing along with Terry & Todd. During her teenage years Charlotte had hopped the train up to Snoqualmie Pass to ski.
Charlotte enjoyed the years living in Upper Preston. Whether she was puttering around the outdoors gardening, making her sought after Almond Roca candy, playing some wonderful music on the piano and accordion or relaxing with family and friends. She was happy. Charlotte and Bill built a new house on the property next door to the “Cabin” and moved into their new house in 1990 after Charlotte finished with the final touches of decorating. Charlotte, Bill and Todd’s lives were hit hard with the sudden and unexpected death of their eldest son/brother Terry in January 1995 due to complications of brain aneurysms. Deciding they needed of change of scenery Charlotte and Bill began searching for a new area to live. They found a beautiful home in Gig Harbor, which overlooked the Harbor and gave them picturesque views of Mount Rainier. Charlotte and Bill enjoyed their retirement years in Gig Harbor making many new friends and exploring the harbor with their grand daughters, Camille and Rachael. They were both always eager to head over the bridge to watch a Tacoma Rainiers baseball game at Cheney Stadium.
Charlotte and Bill were happily married for 41 years until Bill’s passing from cancer in 2003.
Charlotte decided to move to the Lodge at Mallards Landing in Gig Harbor in April 2012. Making the move with Charlotte was her loving companion cat, Samantha aka “Sammy”. Charlotte and Sammy enjoyed the many comforts the Lodge provided. Charlotte was moved in to the memory care facility at the lodge in 2016 due to advances in her battle with Dementia and Alzheimer’s.
